Former trainee doctor guilty of data breach charges following rape conviction

Salil Korambayil, a former trainee surgeon, has pleaded guilty to misusing patient records at hospital trusts in Cornwall and Devon. This follows on from the conviction he received for rape in 2023, where he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Korambayil has pleaded guilty to three charges relating to misuse of records at hospital trusts in Devon and Cornwall and has been sentenced to 12 months, which will be served consecutively with the sentence he received for rape.
Korambayil admitted to looking at patient records at the NHS trusts where he had previously worked - the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.
Royal Devon University Healthcare has stated that any patients whose records were accessed have been contacted. The information that was accessed in the data breaches has not been publicly disclosed. The police have assured that the personal information accessed by Korambayil was not shared further.
