What Happened in the People’s Energy Data Breach?
People’s Energy suffered a serious cyber attack in 2020. This breach exposed sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, customer account numbers and tariff details.
The breach was discovered on the morning of 16th December 2020 and was reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the energy regulator Ofgem, the National Centre for Cyber-Security, and the police.
People’s Energy customers across Scotland, England, and Wales were notified after the breach on 18th December 2020 by email.
Co-founder, Karin Sode, told BBC News that the company was investigating the breach and had hired independent experts to assist but, as part of the initial investigation, they had no information about the identity of the hackers.
Ms Sode said: "This is a big blow in every way. We want people to feel they can trust us. This was not part of the plan. We're upset and sorry."
People’s Energy dissolved in 2021, but administrators were able to recover millions of pounds as part of the administration process. As such, it is believed there are funds to potentially compensate customers who were impacted by the data breach.

What Is Hayes Connor Doing to Help?
All businesses have a duty to their customers to protect their data from being accessed by external sources. We put our trust in these companies to protect our details so we can remain safe from fraudulent activity. This is why, when a mistake like this occurs, those affected will usually have grounds to claim data breach compensation.
At Hayes Connor, we understand the emotional impact a data breach can have. We have already submitted approximately 300 claims to the administrators on behalf of affected customers, most seeking compensation of £1,000.
For each claim, we have highlighted the distress suffered by the claimants and referenced the specific section of GDPR that entitles them to damages.
The administrators have responded, and we are now in the process of submitting a more detailed, subjective description of the impact for each claimant, which will also apply to any new claimants who join the claim.
Hayes Connor has one of the largest teams of data breach claims specialists in the country, boasting a wealth of experience in representing clients from similar breaches.
